What is the difference between STCG and LTCG?

Short Term Capital Gains (STCG): assets held for less than 12 months for equities (or 24-36 months for others). STCG on equities is taxed at 15%. Long Term Capital Gains (LTCG) on equities above ₹1 Lakh per year is taxed at 10% (without indexation).

Can I set off capital losses?

Yes. Short-term capital losses can be set off against both STCG and LTCG. Long-term capital losses can only be set off against LTCG. Unadjusted losses can be carried forward for 8 years.

My broker gives a P&L statement — is that enough?

It's a good starting point, but it may not reflect AIS data or demat transfers correctly. We reconcile your broker P&L with the AIS to ensure 100% accuracy and avoid any mismatch notices.

How is property (house/land) sale taxed?

Gain on property held for more than 24 months is LTCG, taxed at 20% with indexation benefit. Exemptions under Section 54 (buy another house) or 54EC (invest in bonds) can significantly reduce or eliminate this tax.

What about F&O (Futures & Options) trading losses?

F&O is treated as 'Business Income', not capital gains. Losses from F&O can be set off against other business income and carried forward for 8 years, but a tax audit may be required if turnover exceeds specified limits.
